Science/ Design Technology

Science Curriculum

At White Ash School Science is an essential part of the curriculum.  Through the teaching of Science, we endeavour to provide opportunities to observe and consider the world around us and stimulate a pupil’s curiosity in finding out why things happen in the way that they do.

We believe that it is important to promote a positive attitude towards science amongst all our pupils in order to develop self-confidence and a sense of achievement.

Science is also to be taught incidentally as appropriate within other subjects.

The Science Curriculum provides lessons that are differentiated appropriately to meet the needs and ages of the pupils, thereby ensuring progression as they move through school. By using personalised approaches to teaching and content, the experiences and targets will be altered to take account of a pupils’ growth.

All pupils will be encouraged to engage in relevant and challenging scientific activities based on practical 'hands on' experiences. The teaching of science provides opportunities for group work, paired work, whole class teaching and individual work.



Design and Technology Curriculum

Design Technology is taught alongside Science as it is an essential subject that encourages problem solving and experimentation. Design Technology also helps to develop and enable numeracy, literacy and communication skills in addition to promoting life skills..


Design and technology is an inspiring, practical subject. Pupils design, make and test products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts. They acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. Pupils learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. 

Design Technology covers a breadth of skills including Food Technology, Structures and Mechanisms and Textiles/ Materials and topics have been designed to slot in with half termly Science themes. Teaching is differentiated and designed around each pupil.
