Reading and sharing stories at home is a fantastic tool in developing a child’s love for reading.  It builds confidence, fluency, and imagination. Here is a link to some top tips on reading at home.

Top tips to support your child's reading at home - BBC Bitesize

At White Ash School we aim to promote reading for pleasure in school and at home.  Home reading packs will be sent home, containing reading books and a reading record.  Books will be matched accordingly to your child’s reading level, whether this is picture books, recognising letter sounds or chapter books.

In School, we use a reading programme called Bug Club.  This is an online reading resource, ensuring that pupils can access a range of reading materials anytime and anywhere.

Books can be accessed both online and in hard copies.

We also used a reading scheme called Words First.  This supports the reading of High Frequency words through the use of Makaton signs and colourful reading books.

Using the online reading world of Bug Club:

If you have access to an internet connection, your child can enjoy reading Bug Club books online as well as in print. Each child has a unique homepage and can log into it by following these steps:

  1. Go to www.activelearnprimary.co.uk
  2. Enter the login details.
  3. Your child’s homepage will appear.

Log in details which can be requested from class teachers.  Online books are updated once all books in a certain coloured level are complete.  Reading books in home reading packs are changed weekly.
